Road to Membership

Membership in the First Universalist Society of Central Square is not necessary for participation in the life of this church. However, there are benefits that come with membership. The more formal benefit is the ability to vote on congregational matters, which includes selection of board members. The less tangible benefits are knowing that you are part of an organization and that your membership helps to build both the local church and the Unitarian-Universalist movement.

Though you will never be pressured to become a member and your opinions and comments will be thoughtfully considered whether or not you are a member, membership does deepen your commitment and carries with it a greater sense of belonging to this community. Requirements for membership are a financial contribution that the member determines is within his or her budget and/or some form of service to the church in lieu of a financial contribution, at least once during the church year.

The road to membership is not difficult. We ask that anyone interested in membership contact the minister and then meet with the membership committee at a mutually agreed upon time. At that meeting the prospective member will be given information including the history of Unitarian Universalism, the history of First Universalist Society of Central Square, the structure of the national organization and the structure of this church. The prospective member will be encouraged to share their spiritual history and journey, and ask questions of the committee. If, at the end of this meeting, the person still wishes to be a member, a Sunday Service will be designated to welcome them into the church. At that time, the person will sign the registrar’s book and receive a welcome and pledge of support from the congregation.
